1. Why do you have a reading period? Why can't I submit a manuscript whenever I want to?
We feel it's fairest to our submitters and to our editors to have a reading period. We read submissions from January 1 through March 31 each year. We then choose the material we want to publish for the entire year. You know when your accepted piece will be published, and we can plan for an entire year.
2. Your mission is to help new writers get published. Does that mean I can be published only once in NEWN?
No. We will consider material from previously published writers. If, however, we receive two manuscripts of equal merit, one from a published writer and one from an unpublished writer, we will publish the unpublished writer.
3. Why do you ask us to send a self-addressed envelope with sufficient postage for return of the complete manuscript when it's less expensive to send a SASE for your reply only?
If we can't use your work (whether it's a poem, personal essay, or work of fiction}, the editor will send you a brief critique to suggest ways to improve your writing. We frequently make notes on your manuscript. You will want us to return your manuscript to make sure you get the complete critique.
4. What is the best way to get my submission to stand out from the rest?
Follow our guidelines. Before sending us your submission, reread our guidelines, then double check to make sure your submission meets our requirements for content and format. This makes your piece easier for an overworked editor to read and makes it more likely to be chosen.
